I first tried this at the Battersea Beer Festival (CAMRA) a few years ago after pointing at what another man ordered and saying “one of those please”. Since then I’ve not looked back. This is by far my favourite beer ever when it is fresh on draft. Bottle is good too but it seems to lose something. It also takes an age to pour (longer than Guiness) but it is well worth the wait. Sitting for me somewhere between a dark beer and a wheat beer it contains the best selection of Bavarian wheat, dark barley malt and hops. It has a distinctive chestnut color and will very easily pour with a very creamy and fine-pored foam head.
Andechs Weissbier Dunkel tastes quite fruity especially ripe banana and pineapple, with subtle caramel and chocolate flavours too but without mistaking it for what it is – a gorgeous beer that is hard to find but well worth buying when available. In fact I often take home bottles of the stuff after each beer festival I go to. If you can’t get this – Waitrose do an own brand Bavarian Dark Wheat beer by the bottle which is on a par.
