A superb find in the heart of Covent Garden market, just head to the lower ground level and the Crusting Pipe wine bar and restaurant will greet you warmly. The first thing that struck me was that the real ale selection is exclusively Meantime beers, specifically their London Pale Ale, London Lager, India Pale Ale and Porter. For me this is a sign of a bar that takes its beer seriously and not as an after-thought. More variation would have been nice but as the Crusting Pipe is known mainly for its wine and food this was not a surprise. It is also hard to get upset by this when Meantime London Pale is one of my favourite beers.

The wine selection is good, mainly French and the food looked lovely too (although I have to admit that I stuck to Meantime and no food on my first outing here). It was a touch expensive but in the context of the location I wouldn’t hold it against the Crusting Pipe. It feels a lot like Gordon’s Wine Bar with its subterranean feel, good wine selection, dark wood tables and chairs and soft lighting. One of the best bars in Covent Garden although as you would expect, book a table to avoid not getting a seat.

I’ve been to Covent Garden numerous times but have always missed the Crusting Pipe (maybe it is the unassuming fascade) but now I will definitely be going back and trying both the food and the wine and recommend that you at least pop your head in if you are in the neighbourhood.
