Gordon’s Wine Bar is AMAZING. It feels like a proper speak easy set in an abandoned air raid shelter. As the name suggests it is only wines and ports etc on the drinks menu but the selection is impeccable, my personal favourite is the Siglo Rioja 1881. So those of you not into wine should leave now… or convert yourselves to vino as it doesn’t get better than in here. Candles and subtle lights fill the room which feels like it hasn’t changed since the 1940’s and with the old printed news papers from The Coronation and the Royal Weddings of the period you really do feel transported back in time. See the pictures below (taken from Gordon‘s website) for a proper feel of the place. It is only a short 1 minute or less walk from Embankment tube station up Villiers Street on the right hand side. Like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Gordon‘s also looks closed and run down from the outside but don’t let this deceive you. Push open the door and head downstairs and I can guarantee you won’t have been anywhere quite like it before.

A word of warning, space is limited, it is a gem in the middle of the city (almost opposite Price Waterhouse Cooper’s offices) and it was listed in 2010’s Lonely Planet amongst others. So getting there early is advised if you like a seat. In the summer (and winter with heaters) there is a nice outside area with it’s own bar, but it really isn’t the same experience. My recommendation once you have found a glass of wine you like is buy the bottle as you will definitely want to stay there for a long time.

Praise doesn’t come much higher for Gordon’s Wine Bar. Also – did I mention the selection of wonderful cheese and sides that are available to buy as a side dish to your wine? Again – fantastic and was a godsend as I literally wanted to try every wine before leaving. My advice – take a day off and spend the mid afternoon here after taking in some sights or before a show.
